Getting a pressure filter from delivery to the first production run is a defined process with specific technical requirements at each stage. When those requirements are met in sequence, commissioning proceeds efficiently and the equipment reaches stable operation quickly. When they are not, problems compound and first production runs are delayed. This article covers what to expect across each stage of pressure filter installation and commissioning, from site preparation through to handover and ongoing performance support.

Site preparation and pre-delivery requirements

Successful pressure filter installation begins well before the equipment arrives on site. Civil and structural work must be complete, with the foundation designed to handle both the static weight of the unit and the dynamic loads generated during diaphragm pressing and cake discharge cycles. For a vertical pressure filter such as the Tower Press TP™, this means accounting for the full height of the unit, access clearances for cloth maintenance, and the structural load path through the frame to the foundation.

Utility connections need to be in place before mechanical installation begins. This includes compressed air supply at the correct pressure and flow rate, process water lines for cloth washing, electrical supply matched to the motor specifications, and drainage provisions for filtrate and wash water. Confirming these against the equipment’s technical data sheet before delivery avoids delays that are difficult to recover once installation is underway. Site access for the delivery vehicle and any lifting equipment should also be confirmed in advance, particularly for large filtration units that arrive in multiple sections.

Mechanical installation: sequence and critical checkpoints

Mechanical installation follows a defined sequence. The base frame is positioned and levelled first, since all subsequent alignment depends on it. Shimming and grouting must be completed and cured before the filter plate pack or upper structure is assembled. Rushing this step introduces misalignment that affects filter cloth tracking, plate sealing, and long-term wear.

Once the main structure is in place, the filter cloth is threaded and tensioned according to the manufacturer’s specification. Correct cloth installation is one of the most consequential steps in the entire process: an incorrectly tracked cloth will cause uneven cake formation, premature cloth wear, and inconsistent filtrate quality from the first cycle. Hydraulic and pneumatic connections are completed next, followed by electrical terminations. Before any process fluid is introduced, all mechanical connections should be checked against the installation drawings, and all safety interlocks verified as functional. Commissioning stages from dry runs to full process loads

Dry runs confirm that all mechanical movements execute correctly, that interlocks respond as designed, and that the control system sequences through the full filter press cycle without faults. This is the point to identify any valve that does not open fully, any sensor that reads incorrectly, or any timing parameter that needs adjustment. Water trials introduce liquid to the system and test the hydraulic circuits, cloth washing system, and filtrate drainage under realistic flow conditions, but without the abrasive or chemically active components of the actual slurry. Process commissioning then brings the unit up to full operating conditions in stages, progressively increasing feed pressure and diaphragm pressing pressure toward design values while monitoring cake moisture content, cycle time, and filtrate clarity. Results at this stage will vary depending on slurry characteristics, and it is worth noting that filtration testing on a representative slurry sample before installation provides a reliable baseline for what to expect.

Common installation challenges and how to mitigate them

Several recurring issues appear across pressure filter installations, most of which are avoidable with preparation. Foundation settlement or inadequate grouting cure time is a common cause of frame misalignment discovered only after the plate pack is assembled. The mitigation is straightforward: follow the specified cure period and verify levelness before proceeding.

Utility supply mismatches are another frequent source of commissioning delays. Compressed air systems that deliver adequate pressure at low demand but drop below specification under full filter press cycle conditions will cause inconsistent diaphragm performance and incomplete air drying of the cake. Flow rate, not just pressure, must be confirmed at peak demand. Electrical supply issues, including incorrect phase rotation or undersized cabling, are best identified during dry runs rather than under process load. A third area to watch is filter cloth installation: even experienced installation teams benefit from a supervised first cloth threading on a new model, since cloth routing paths differ between equipment types. Handover, documentation, and long-term performance support

Commissioning concludes with a formal handover that transfers operational responsibility to the site team. At this point, the documentation package should be complete: as-built drawings, spare parts lists with part numbers, operating and maintenance manuals, commissioning records including baseline cycle data, and completed safety inspection records. This documentation is the foundation for all future maintenance and troubleshooting, and gaps in it create operational risk over time.

Operator training is part of handover and should not be treated as optional.
