Roxia Tower Press™ Pressure Filter Enhancing Talc Filtration

Mondo Minerals B.V. Vuonos talc production plant in Finland replaced the outdated filtration equipment with a Roxia Tower Press™ 16 pressure filter.

Products & Solutions

Project overview

  • Customer & application: Mondo Minerals B.V., Vuonos plant, Finland. Talc filtration
  • Task: Replacement of an end-of-life filter and increase in capacity
  • Solution: Roxia Tower Press™ 16 pressure filter, 38 m²
  • Installation: November 2025
  • Results: Higher filtration capacity within the same footprint, efficient talc filtration, and improved usability and versatility

Replacing End-of-Life Equipment with Modern Filtration Technology

The Vuonos plant previously operated a pressure filter with a filtration area of 32 m². The filter had served the process for many years, but as it reached the end of its lifecycle, a replacement project was initiated. In addition to renewing the equipment, increasing capacity was identified as a clear additional objective.

“Replacing the filter was necessary. With the old machine, capacity could occasionally become a limiting factor, although not continuously. With the new filter, these limitations should no longer exist.”

– Hannes Holmström, Supervisor Concentration Plant, Mondo Minerals Vuonos

With the new Roxia Tower Press™ 16 filter, the filtration area increased from 32 m² to 38 m² while the equipment footprint remained unchanged. This was a significant factor in the decision-making process, as no competing solutions offering comparable capacity within the same footprint were available from other suppliers.

Test Filtration Ensured Optimal Process Performance

Prior to the final supply decision, Roxia carried out test filtration trials for Mondo Minerals’ talc process. The objective of the tests was to determine the optimal filtration cycle and verify the targeted capacity as well as a consistently dry, high-quality filter cake.

The test results clearly demonstrated that the Roxia Tower Press™ would deliver a significant improvement compared to the outgoing, end-of-life equipment, both in terms of capacity and filtration performance.

Why Roxia Was Selected as the Supplier

Alternative solutions were evaluated, but Roxia was ultimately chosen as the supplier for several reasons.

Key decision factors included:

  • Modern and highly advanced filtration technology
  • Higher capacity within the same footprint
  • Ease of maintenance and overall operational simplicity

“In many respects, this felt clearly more up to date compared to the alternatives. From a technology standpoint, Roxia had an advantage.”

– Hannes Holmström, Supervisor Concentration Plant, Mondo Minerals Vuonos

Turnkey Delivery and Smooth Commissioning

Mondo Minerals ordered a turnkey solution from Roxia, including the delivery, installation, commissioning, and operator training for the Roxia Tower Press™ 16 filter (38 m²). The project was completed according to schedule, and the filter was successfully commissioned without delays.

“Cooperation with Roxia was smooth throughout the entire project. Already at the design stage, it was clear that the work was being carried out by true professionals. The workmanship was careful, the automation and PLC user interface were excellently implemented, and commissioning proceeded without issues. At no point were we left on our own. Any matters were resolved together with an open and solution-oriented approach.”

– Harri Multanen, Development Engineer,  Mondo Minerals

Maintainability is further supported by structural design features such as an upper service platform and easy access to the cylinders.

Increased Capacity, Improved Usability, and Better Maintainability

After commissioning, the Roxia Tower Press™  has delivered clear improvements to the process:

  • Filtration area increased from 32 m² to 38 m²
  • Significantly higher capacity within the same footprint
  • Targeted filter cake dryness and thickness
  • Efficient and reliable talc filtration
  • Clear and user-friendly modern control interface and automation

The increase in capacity is significant, and we are satisfied with the achieved moisture levels. The defined targets have been met. Operation is easy and clear. The automation is much more versatile than in the old machine, given the significant age difference between the units. The hydraulics and cloth guidance are like night and day compared to the previous equipment.

– Hannes Holmström, Supervisor Concentration Plant, Mondo Minerals Vuonos

Open Cooperation Toward a Shared Goal

“Cooperation with Mondo Minerals Vuonos was open and flexible throughout the project. We had a clear shared objective and worked systematically to achieve it, During commissioning, any changes and clarifications were addressed immediately. Overall, a very pleasant project.”

– Tero Penttilä, Project Manager, Roxia

Our Customer: Mondo Minerals B.V., Vuonos Plant

Mondo Minerals is one of the world’s leading suppliers of talc and talc-based solutions, serving customers across a wide range of industries. The Vuonos plant in Outokumpu, Finland, is an important part of the company’s production network, where reliable and efficient filtration plays a key role in ensuring high product quality.

With the Roxia Tower Press™ 16 filter, the Vuonos plant is well equipped for efficient filtration of high-quality talc well into the future.

We would like to thank Mondo Minerals B.V. for the excellent cooperation and trust.

Why Tower Press™ Technology Performs Particularly Well in Talc Filtration

Talc filtration is one of the most demanding solid–liquid separation applications in the minerals industry. Extremely fine particle size, the hydrophobic nature of the material, and strict purity requirements make consistent and efficient dewatering challenging.

The Roxia Tower Press™ pressure filter is exceptionally well suited for talc filtration. It produces very dry filter cakes, maintains high filtration efficiency, and operates fully automatically. Forced cake discharge and continuous filter cloth washing keep the filtration surfaces open and permeable even with the finest talc concentrates.

At the Vuonos plant, these features are directly reflected in process stability, consistent product quality, and reliable moisture levels—all of which are critical factors in high-quality talc production.
